Besides the Guwahati-North Guwahati Bridge, Assam CM Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma also inspected progress of construction work of the flyover connecting Bamunimaidam and Reserve Bank
In a major boost to the city’s infrastructure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the much-anticipated bridge connecting Guwahati and North Guwahati — which has been named the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Bridge — on February 14.
Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, who conducted a late-night inspection of the construction site on Wednesday to ensure the final stages of the project are on track, said Prime Minister Modi will dedicate the bridge to the nation.
Built at an estimated cost of Rs 3,000 crore, this 6-lane bridge is being hailed not just as a feat of engineering, but as a symbol of local skill.
Breaking Stereotypes with Local Labour
During his visit, Chief Minister Dr Sarma emphasized the involvement of indigenous workers in the project. He noted that while the Bogibeel Bridge was largely constructed by Mising youths, the Guwahati-North Guwahati bridge has also been built by local labourers.
“There was a prevailing mindset that only ‘Miya’ labourers could handle such rigorous construction work in Assam. These bridges have changed that narrative,” CM Dr Sarma stated.
“Our local youth have proven their expertise and capability by being at the forefront of this massive construction,” he added.
Chief Minister Dr Sarma also inspected the under-construction flyover connecting Bamunimaidam to the Reserve Bank and announced that a section of the structure will be opened for two-wheelers and light vehicles by Feb 28 while the stretch from Noonmati to Guwahati Club will be opened to all forms of traffic on March 15.
Built at a cost of Rs 850 crore, the flover spanning Spanning 5.44 kms is named after Maharaja Prithu and will become the longest flyover in the State.
Future Expansions
Dr Sarma further announced plans for additional wings to the flyover system. One arm will be constructed from Guwahati Club towards Ulubari, while another branch will connect Chandmari to Rajgarh, aiming to further decongest the city’s traffic.
Chief Minister Dr Sarma also announced that the Bharalumukh flyover which is nearing completion is expected to be inaugurated in the last week of February besides announcing that the Cycle Factory flyover is expected to be completed by Rongali Bihu.
