Himanta Biswa Sarma turns 57: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah praise the Assam CM’s leadership and extend birthday greetings
Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma turned 57 on Sunday amid an overwhelming display of affection from supporters and warm greetings from top national leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
From late Saturday night through the early hours of Sunday, thousands of well-wishers gathered outside the Chief Minister’s residence to personally convey their wishes, creating a festive and emotional atmosphere.
Celebrating with the Masses
Dr Sarma personally interacted with supporters, accepting gifts that symbolised his connection with Assam’s history and people. Several admirers presented statues of Ahom general Bir Lachit Barphukan, drawing comparisons between the legendary warrior’s legacy and the Chief Minister’s leadership in safeguarding Assam’s interests.
Early Sunday morning, the Chief Minister visited the Maa Kamakhya Temple atop Nilachal Hill to seek blessings. Despite tight security, large crowds assembled at the revered shrine to greet him.
National Leaders Extend Greetings
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first to wish the Assam CM, lauding his role in the state’s development.
“Warm birthday wishes to Assam CM Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma Ji. Under his leadership, Assam has made remarkable progress across sectors. Praying for his long and healthy life in service of the people,” PM Modi posted on X.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also praised Dr Sarma’s dedication and governance.
“Warm birthday greetings to Chief Minister of Assam Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma Ji. Your tireless efforts towards realising Modi Ji’s vision of a developed, peaceful and safe Assam are commendable. Wishing you good health and continued strength in public service,” Shah said.
Focus on Assam and 2026
Addressing speculation about a possible move to national politics, Dr Sarma dismissed the reports, reiterating that his priorities remain firmly rooted in Assam.
“There is still much work to be done for my state. My dream and mission are to ensure the BJP forms the government again in Assam in 2026. I am committed to working with double the energy over the next five years to take Assam to new heights of development,” he stated.
