Man-animal conflict has been on the rise in Assam with wild animals, including elephant, leopards and even Royal Bengal tigers, straying into villages in search of food
A leopard was caged at Namti Latumgaon in Sivasagar district of Assam after it had created terror and fear among villagers for months.
Besides devouring cattle and livestock, the leopard had even attacked people, injuring at least three persons in the past few months after entering villages in search of food.
People, along with the support of Halowating forest office, had placed a cage with a live bait.
The efforts finally bore fruit late Saturday night after the big cat entered the cage and was trapped inside the enclosure.
“Leopards have been creating terror in several villages in several villages in Namti. We were living in fear and even refrained from going out after dusk. Now that the leopard has been caged, we would request the forest department to release it in another forest so that it doesn’t make its way back to our locality,” a local resident said.
Villagers also said that there are a few other leopards in the forested areas nearby while they also suspect the presence of a Royal Bengal Tiger along with the leopards and requested forest officials to cage them as well.
