Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said the Election Commission may announce the poll schedule shortly and expressed confidence that the BJP-led alliance will secure a decisive victory in the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.
Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said that there is a strong possibility the Assam Assembly elections will be held before Rongali Bihu, with the Election Commission of India expected to announce the poll schedule anytime soon.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of a cheque distribution programme at Sotai in Assam’s Jorhat district, Dr Sarma said past election timelines indicate that Assembly polls in the state are usually conducted before the Bihu festivities.
“Election dates are generally announced towards the end of February or in early March. In recent years, Assembly elections in Assam have been held before Rongali Bihu. The State Government also prefers that elections take place ahead of the Bihu celebrations. Based on previous schedules, we expect the Assam Assembly elections to be held before Bihu this year as well,” the Chief Minister said.
Commenting on the electoral prospects of the BJP-led alliance, Dr Sarma asserted that the people of Assam have already made up their minds in favour of the ruling coalition.
“The people of Assam have already given their verdict. There is no doubt that the BJP and its alliance partners will sweep the elections this time,” he said.
