Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Tarique Rahman has emerged as a leading contender for the post of Prime Minister in the upcoming February general elections
Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s son Tarique Rahman, who is the acting chairman of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), landed in Dhaka on Thursday after spending 17 years in self-exile in the United Kingdom.
60-year-old Rahman, who was accompanied by his wife Zubaida Rahman and daughter Zaima Rahman, has emerged as a leading contender for the post of Prime Minister in the upcoming February general elections in the wake of the leadership vacuum in the party with Khaleda Zia being critically ill.
Thousands of BNP supporters and party leaders marched to the airport to welcome Tarique Rahman.
He was received at the airport by senior members of the BNP Standing Committee, from where he travelled to a reception in the 300 Feet area of Purbachal.
Videos showed Rahman travelling in one of the two bulletproof vehicles which were specially imported for him.
Party leaders and activists lined both sides of the road to greet him.
Elaborate security arrangements were put in place in Dhaka for the exiled leader’s homecoming.
