This historic ascent stands as a glowing tribute to the mighty Eastern Himalayas and underscores the Indian Army’s enduring commitment to pushing the limits of human endurance and operational excellence.
In a landmark achievement and a proud moment for the nation, an Indian Army mountaineering team from the Eastern Command has successfully summited Mount Kangto — the highest and, until now, unconquered sentinel peak of Arunachal Pradesh.
Standing at 7,042 meters or 23,103 feet, Mount Kangto had long stood as an untamed guardian of the Kameng Himalayas, with no recorded successful ascent. This historic feat marks the first time the formidable peak has been conquered.
Flagged off on 3 November from a forward base by the General Officer Commanding, Gajraj Corps, the 18-member team embarked on an arduous expedition through some of the toughest Himalayan terrain. The climbers braved rarefied air, severe sub-zero temperatures, treacherous icy ridgelines, deep crevasses, and near-vertical ice walls as they approached the summit via the extremely challenging southern route.
The team was formally ‘flagged in’ by Lt Gen R C Tiwari, Army Commander, Eastern Command, who lauded their exceptional grit, professionalism and perseverance.
