In a coordinated pre-dawn operation on Wednesday, Tripura police arrested a 52-year-old man wanted in connection with a case registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The accused, identified as Jahar Miah, a resident of Tamsabari, Uttar Para under Sonamura Police Station, was taken into custody from West Noabadi Amtali under the Bodhjungnagar police station limits in West Tripura district. According to police sources, Miah had been evading arrest.
The arrest was carried out jointly by personnel from Sonamura, Amtali, and Bodhjungnagar police stations, based on specific intelligence.
Inspector Tapas Das, Officer-in-Charge of Sonamura Police Station, said the case was registered on the night of December 1, 2025, following allegations that Miah had outraged the modesty of a minor girl and attempted an indecent act. “After committing the crime, he was absconding. Today, we arrested him in a joint operation. He will be produced before the court, and interrogation is underway to gather more details,” Inspector Das said.
This incident comes amid rising concern over child safety in the state. Around two months ago, a minor girl in North Tripura district was allegedly sexually assaulted and murdered, with the accused, her maternal grandfather, later arrested in neighboring Assam.
