In what is being seen as a massive news for Assam and sports administration in the State, Devajit Saikia, will replace Jay Shah as Secretary of BCCI after his appointment was confirmed by BCCI president and former India international Roger Binny.
Devajit Saikia, who was appointed to the prestigious role of Board Director of the International Cricket Council (ICC), will officiate as acting secretary till September next year when a full-time appointment will be made.
“Hope this email finds you well. As you are aware, Hon Secretary, Mr. Jay Shah has been elected as the Chairperson of the ICC with effect from December 1, 2024. While it is indeed a proud moment for the BCCI, his election to the ICC has left the post of Hon. Secretary vacant. “In accordance with the BCCI Rules and Regulations, Rule 7 (1) (d): “The President shall, in the event of a vacancy or indisposition of an Office Bearer, delegate the functions to another Office Bearer until the vacancy is duly filled up, or the indisposition ceases”. Accordingly, I hereby delegate the functions of the Secretary to you till the post is duly filled up as per the processes laid down as per the BCCI Rules and Regulations. “I wish you all the very best and I am confident that you will perform the functions to the best of your ability and with aplomb,” Roger Binny wrote to Devajit Saikia, confirming his appointment.
Saikia, who is serving the BCCI as Joint Secretary, is a former Ranji player, ex-secretary of Assam Cricket Association (ACA) and also the Advocate General of Assam, has had a long career in sports administration and his appointment as acting BCCI secretary has been welcomed by sports lovers of the State.
