Statewide protests intensify after Assam CM Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma reveals SIT findings alleging Pakistan connections involving Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi and his wife
Assam witnessed massive statewide protests on Sunday after Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma made public what he described as “explosive findings” of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into alleged Pakistan links of Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and his British wife, Elizabeth Colburn Gogoi.
The CM’s revelations, shared during a high-voltage press conference, triggered widespread demonstrations across the state, with BJP leaders, ministers, MLAs, and large numbers of citizens taking to the streets. What drew particular attention was the participation of a sitting Congress legislator, who led protests demanding strict action against the Jorhat MP.
Sashi Kanta Das, Congress MLA from Raha constituency in Nagaon district, joined the demonstrations following the allegations levelled by the Chief Minister. Das sought a thorough investigation and accountability, citing the seriousness of the SIT’s claims.
Across Assam, protesters raised slogans branding Gaurav Gogoi a “Pakistani agent” and demanded his immediate arrest, alleging that national security had been compromised.
In Nalbari, thousands marched from Gordon Field to the local police station, chanting “Gaurav Gogoi Go Back” and demanding that the MP respond publicly to the allegations made against him.
A similar scene unfolded in Dhubri, where a massive rally turned the streets into a sea of protesters. Demonstrators placed garlands made of shoes and sandals on Gogoi’s posters and raised slogans of “Gaurav Gogoi Murdabad,” calling for his immediate detention.
The state capital Guwahati saw intense political activity as BJP workers organized a large procession starting from Khanapara Field, passing through Jayanagar near the ESIC Hospital, and returning to the starting point. Protesters repeatedly shouted slogans accusing the MP of acting against national interests.
In Majuli, BJP workers and local residents staged protests, describing the SIT findings as “deeply alarming” and asserting that the issue concerns the safety and sovereignty of the nation. They demanded full transparency from the Congress leadership.
The protests reached Jorhat, Gogoi’s home constituency, where demonstrators gathered outside the residence of his late father, former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, at Nazir Ali, raising slogans against the MP.
Widespread demonstrations were also reported from several parts of Upper Assam.
In Dibrugarh, State BJP President Dilip Saikia and Minister Prasanta Phukan led a large rally demanding that Gogoi clarify his position on the SIT’s findings.
In Tinsukia, thousands marched through the town up to Thana Chariali, chanting slogans such as “Pakistani Gaurav Gogoi, Go Back.”
In Golaghat, BJP workers organized a major rally, asserting that the alleged links pose a direct threat to national security.
Bike Rallies and Demand for Central Intervention
In Lakhimpur, citizens organized a massive bike rally from Ranganadi to the heart of Lakhimpur town, waving flags and chanting slogans against the MP.
Meanwhile, protesters in Goalpara appealed to the Union Home Minister to register a formal case and order a comprehensive central investigation into the allegations.
In Diphu, demonstrators demanded that Gaurav Gogoi address the public immediately, stating that an elected representative cannot remain silent on issues related to national integrity and security.
