Arsenal tighten grip on top spot with dominant Sunderland win, Cole Palmer hits hat-trick for Chelsea, and Michael Carrick’s Manchester United extend winning run on action-packed Matchday 25
The Premier League title race swung decisively in Arsenal’s favour on Saturday as the Gunners cruised to a commanding 3-0 victory over Sunderland to open up a nine-point lead at the top of the table.
It was a dramatic Matchday 25 across England, with Manchester United continuing their revival under Michael Carrick and Chelsea climbing into the top five after a sensational Cole Palmer display.
Arsenal tighten grip on summit
At the Emirates Stadium, Mikel Arteta’s side looked every inch title contenders as they brushed aside Sunderland with a polished performance. After probing patiently, Arsenal broke the deadlock just before halftime when summer signing Martin Zubimendi fired home a precise low strike in the 42nd minute.
The game tilted decisively after the break following the introduction of Viktor Gyökeres. The in-form Swedish striker doubled the lead in the 66th minute and capped the night with a stoppage-time goal to seal a convincing win.
The result heaps pressure on title rivals Manchester City and Liverpool, who face each other later tonight.
Carrick’s United continue perfect start
Manchester United’s resurgence under Michael Carrick rolled on at Old Trafford with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.
The contest swung in United’s favour in the 29th minute when Spurs captain Cristian Romero was sent off for a reckless challenge on Casemiro. United took full advantage, with Bryan Mbeumo opening the scoring in the 38th minute from a well-worked set piece.
Captain Bruno Fernandes sealed the points in the 81st minute, marking his 200th goal involvement for the club and keeping United firmly in fourth place. For Tottenham and manager Thomas Frank, the defeat extended a worrying winless run in 2026.
Palmer dazzles as Chelsea rise
Chelsea climbed to fifth in the standings after Cole Palmer delivered a stunning first-half hat-trick in a 3-1 win over Wolves at Molineux.
Palmer struck three times inside the opening 40 minutes — including two composed penalties — leaving the hosts shell-shocked. Tolu Arokodare pulled one back for Wolves, but Chelsea were never threatened as their talismanic playmaker ran the show.
Relegation fight and European race heat up
Elsewhere, West Ham strengthened their survival push with a crucial 2-0 away win over Burnley, leaving the Clarets firmly stuck in the relegation zone.
Brentford pulled off a dramatic 3-2 victory at St James’ Park, with Dango Ouattara scoring a late winner to stun Newcastle United.
Aston Villa missed the chance to close ground on the leaders after being held 1-1 by Bournemouth, as Brazilian teenager Rayan canceled out Morgan Rogers’ opener.
Everton completed the day’s action with a spirited 2-1 comeback win over Fulham at Craven Cottage.
