A pendulum ride carrying around 26 people malfunctioned and crashed mid-air at the 39th Surajkund International Crafts Mela in Faridabad, triggering panic and exposing serious safety lapses.
What was meant to be a festive evening at the 39th Surajkund International Crafts Mela turned tragic on Saturday (February 7) after a high-speed amusement ride collapsed, killing two people—including an on-duty police inspector—and injuring at least 13 others in Faridabad, Haryana.
How the Accident Unfolded
The incident occurred at around 6:15 pm in the amusement zone of the fairgrounds. The pendulum-style swing, locally known as “Tsunami” or “Top Spin,” was carrying approximately 26 passengers when it reportedly malfunctioned while in motion.
Eyewitnesses said the ride suddenly came loose at one end and remained dangerously tilted mid-air, hanging just a few feet above the ground. As panic spread and screams filled the area, fairgoers and security personnel rushed to help those trapped in their seats.
Inspector Loses Life During Rescue Effort
Inspector Jagdish Prasad (59), who was overseeing security at the swing complex, immediately stepped in to assist with the rescue. A veteran police officer from the Palwal cadre and a native of Mathura, Prasad was only weeks away from retirement in March.
Tragically, while he was helping evacuate passengers, the remaining support structure of the ride collapsed completely. A heavy metal component struck the inspector on his face and head, inflicting fatal injuries. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Casualties and Medical Response
In total, two people lost their lives, while 13 others were injured, including two women constables.
- Nine injured were admitted to Supreme Hospital
- Four others are undergoing treatment at BK Civil Hospital, Faridabad
Officials said most victims are in stable condition, though a few remain under close medical observation.
Earlier Warning Sign Ignored?
In a disturbing coincidence, the swing collapse took place barely an hour after a large decorative gate near the food court fell due to strong winds, injuring a visitor and a child—raising questions over safety preparedness at the mela.
Probe Ordered, Compensation Announced
Faridabad Deputy Commissioner Ayush Sinha, along with senior police officials, rushed to the site and supervised evacuation and crowd control.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, with the ride operator—reportedly from Himachal Pradesh—being examined for possible negligence in maintenance and safety compliance.
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini expressed deep condolences over the deaths, while the Director General of Police (DGP) announced ₹1 crore compensation for the family of the deceased inspector.
