Sikkim: Four former SDF ministers and MLAs, including Sonam Gyatso Lepcha and Tshering Wangdi Lepcha, formally join the Prem Singh Tamang–led SKM.
In a significant political development in Sikkim, four senior leaders from the opposition Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), including former ministers and MLAs, have joined the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM), giving a major boost to the party’s strength and reach across the state.
The leaders were formally welcomed into the SKM by party president and Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang–Golay on Sunday.
Those who joined the ruling party include Sonam Gyatso Lepcha, a four-time MLA, former Power Minister, and former Deputy Speaker, currently associated with the Dzongu constituency; Tshering Wangdi Lepcha, a two-time MLA and former Forest Minister from Lachen–Mangan; Bek Bahadur Rai, a two-time MLA from the Namcheybong constituency; and Ugen Nedup Bhutia, who also represented the Lachen–Mangan constituency.
Their induction is being seen as a major political shift and is expected to further consolidate SKM’s influence in key regions of the state, particularly in northern Sikkim.
Announcing the development on social media, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang–Golay said the leaders’ vast administrative and legislative experience would significantly strengthen the government’s efforts.
“I look forward to working closely with them for the state’s growth and the well-being of our people,” the Chief Minister said.
In addition to the former SDF leaders, ex-SDF spokesperson Rikzing Norbu Dorjee Bhutia and Passang Namgyal Shenga, former treasurer of the Hamro Party Sikkim (HSP), have also joined the ruling SKM, further reinforcing the party’s expanding political base.
