Victims from Dhakuakhana in Assam’s Lakhimpur district were found inside a locked, poorly ventilated rented room in Bengaluru Rural’s Mutsandra area
Four youths from Assam who were found dead inside a locked rented room in the Mutsandra area of Bengaluru Rural district are suspected to have died due to carbon monoxide poisoning caused by a cooking gas leak, according to findings from an initial forensic probe.
The deceased have been identified as Jayanta Sinte Khageswar, Narendranath Taid, Doctor Taid, and Dhananjay Taid, all residents of Dhakuakhana in Assam’s Lakhimpur district. They were employed at a Coca-Cola warehouse in the area.
The bodies were discovered inside a small, poorly ventilated rented room where a gas cylinder leak is believed to have occurred during the night. Forensic experts said the victims likely failed to detect the leak while asleep, allowing carbon monoxide — a colorless, odorless, and highly toxic gas — to accumulate rapidly inside the confined space.
Medical experts explained that carbon monoxide binds with hemoglobin in the blood far more efficiently than oxygen, preventing oxygen supply to vital organs. In enclosed spaces, exposure can prove fatal within minutes. Preliminary reports suggest the four youths may have succumbed to the toxic fumes within 30 minutes.
The incident came to light on Saturday morning after fellow Assamese friends grew concerned when repeated knocking on the door went unanswered. Suspecting foul play or an emergency, they forcibly opened the door.
“We found them lying motionless on their beds. Their eyes appeared unusually red,” one witness said, describing the disturbing scene.
The reddish discoloration, often referred to as the “cherry-red” appearance, is a known clinical indicator of acute carbon monoxide poisoning, caused by the formation of carboxyhemoglobin in the bloodstream.
Local police have registered a case and stated that the exact cause of death will be confirmed after the final forensic report is received.
