The green fuel facility will start with a capacity of 50 TPD, scalable up to 150 TPD, marking APL’s first major expansion outside Assam.
In a significant push towards India’s green energy transition and sustainable maritime infrastructure, Assam Petro-Chemicals Limited (APL) on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) to establish a state-of-the-art E-Methanol production plant at Kandla Port in Gujarat.
The proposed plant will have an initial production capacity of 50 tonnes per day (TPD), with provisions to scale it up to 150 TPD in the future. The project marks a landmark moment for APL, as it expands its footprint beyond Assam for the first time and enters the fast-growing green fuels sector.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat.
Addressing the occasion, CM Sarma said APL, headquartered at Namrup in Assam, has traditionally focused on fossil-based methanol production. “The proposed E-Methanol plant signifies a decisive shift towards cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions. With an estimated investment of around Rs 1,200 crore, the project is expected to generate employment opportunities for nearly 3,000 youths,” he said.
Calling it a major milestone for an Assam-based public sector undertaking, the Chief Minister said the initiative reflects both APL’s growing capabilities and the confidence reposed in it at the national level.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted the global shift towards green energy, particularly in the transportation and maritime sectors. He noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set a national target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070, and the APL–DPA collaboration is a concrete step towards achieving that goal.
Sonowal further said that proactive industrial policies and a strong commitment to green growth have enabled public sector enterprises like APL to expand nationally and contribute meaningfully to India’s clean energy transition.
Emphasising the strategic role of ports in the country’s energy future, Sonowal said DPA’s vision of transforming ports into green energy hubs aligns closely with India’s long-term sustainability goals. “This partnership combines DPA’s world-class port infrastructure with APL’s expertise in methanol production to accelerate the development of green fuels,” he added.
Industries and Commerce Minister Bimal Bora, Power Minister Prasanta Phukan, and Rajya Sabha MP Rameswar Teli were also present at the signing ceremony.
