Tripura: Chief Minister alleges excess funding to TTAADC without commensurate development; warns allies against “hostile politics” ahead of council polls.
Tensions within Tripura’s ruling NDA alliance have sharpened as Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha mounted a fresh attack on ally Tipra Motha Party, accusing it of misusing funds and fostering a culture of political violence in areas under its control.
Speaking to reporters after a mass joining programme in the Bir Chandra Kalsi area of South Tripura district, the Chief Minister alleged that the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), currently governed by Tipra Motha, has been receiving funds well beyond its entitlement, but has failed to translate the resources into visible development on the ground.
“The funds being provided are more than what is deserved, but development is not happening accordingly,” CM Saha said.
In an apparent warning to alliance partners, the Chief Minister said political cooperation cannot coexist with obstruction and aggression. Without naming Tipra Motha directly, he cautioned that partners must act responsibly within the coalition framework.
“One cannot be a partner and at the same time stop our programmes or attack our supporters. This kind of behaviour will not be tolerated,” he stated.
CM Saha further alleged that incidents of political violence have increased in areas controlled by the TTAADC, claiming the pattern resembled practices followed during previous Left Front regimes in the state.
“This time, such incidents will be addressed strictly through legal means. Those involved will not be spared,” he asserted.
The Chief Minister linked the alleged aggression to what he described as the BJP’s rising popularity among indigenous communities. According to him, tribal voters are increasingly shifting towards the BJP, unsettling rival political forces.
He claimed that on Tuesday alone, around 352 voters joined the BJP, citing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiatives for the welfare, security, and empowerment of indigenous communities.
Senior BJP leaders, including state general secretary Bipin Debbarma and MLA Pramod Reang, were present at the joining programme. Party sources said many of the new entrants were previously associated with the Tipra Motha Party.
Highlighting the political significance of the development, CM Saha expressed confidence that the BJP would secure all 28 seats in the upcoming TTAADC elections and form the council government.
The elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council are expected to be held in about two months, amid growing signs of strain within the ruling alliance.
