In a heartbreaking incident in a remote village near Diphu in Karbi Anglong district of Assam, three persons lost their lives while they were involved in digging of a well.
The incident took place at the residence of Tenzing Rongpi, Joint Secretary of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, at Salem Tisso village in Disama near Diphu at around 2:30 pm on Tuesday afternoon.
The deceased have been identified as Tisong Terang (20), Hari Teron (35), and Longsodar Terang (25).
Ironically, the workers had just begun work on what was to be their 100th well — a milestone project that, however, ended in disaster.
The SDRF (State Disaster Response Force) was notified of the incident at around 3:25 pm. Despite their efforts to reach the remote location quickly, the three men had already passed away by the time the rescue team arrived.
The SDRF team recovered the bodies from the depths of the well and sent them to Diphu Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) for post-mortem.
While the exact cause of death remains unconfirmed, the three well-diggers died due to suspected asphyxiation since oxygen levels inside wells dip drastically along with the accumulation of toxic gases.
