African Swine Fever : The total number of dead wild boars is estimated to be around 20.
Mizoram’s Serchhip district authorities have issued an alert after African Swine Fever (ASF) was confirmed in wild boars found dead in forest areas below Thentlang village.
According to the District Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department, villagers in and around Thentlang recently reported the discovery of several dead wild boars in nearby forested regions, raising concerns over a possible disease outbreak.
Officials estimate that around 20 wild boars have died so far. While some carcasses were found in a relatively fresh condition, others were already decomposed at the time of discovery.
Samples collected from the carcasses were sent for laboratory testing, and following multiple Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) examinations, authorities confirmed last Saturday that the animals had tested positive for African Swine Fever.
Despite the detection of the virus in wild boars, officials noted that no cases of ASF have so far been reported among domestic pigs in Thentlang village.
In response, the District Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department has issued an advisory urging Thentlang and surrounding villages to remain on high alert. Pig farmers have been advised to strictly follow precautionary measures, as the ASF virus can spread within a radius of up to one kilometre, including through airborne transmission.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent the disease from spreading to domestic livestock and nearby areas.
