Mizoram: MZP, ZORO Protest in Aizawl Opposing Indo–Myanmar Border Fencing
The Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) and the Zo Re-Unification Organisation (ZORO) on Thursday staged a joint protest at Vanapa Hall in Aizawl against the Centre’s proposed fencing of the Indo–Myanmar border, reiterating their strong opposition to the move.
The organisations argued that fencing the border would create serious security and livelihood challenges for border residents while disrupting centuries-old ethnic, cultural, and familial ties among Zo communities living on both sides of the international boundary.
Addressing the gathering, MZP president C. Lalremruata said the Centre has altered its stance on the issue, now citing illegal smuggling as the primary justification for border fencing. He questioned the necessity of fencing, stating that illegal activities could be tackled through effective monitoring and enforcement rather than physical barriers.
Lalremruata further claimed that smugglers and migrants often cross the border without documentation, adding that fencing would disproportionately affect indigenous communities who have traditionally moved freely across the region.
Both MZP and ZORO described the proposed fencing as an artificial division imposed on closely linked communities with shared social and cultural heritage. The groups said they have already communicated their objections to the central government and urged it to adopt a humane and community-sensitive approach to border management.
Leaders of the organisations warned that if their concerns are not addressed, they would intensify their agitation through sustained and peaceful protests. The demonstration witnessed strong participation, reflecting growing apprehension in Mizoram over the impact of border fencing on the unity and future of the Zo people.
