Multiple road Accidents across Assam and neighbouring Meghalaya claimed seven lives—including two minor sisters—casting a shadow over Bhogali Bihu celebrations.
Bhogali Bihu celebrations across Assam were marred by tragedy after a series of road accidents claimed at least seven lives and left several others injured over the past 24 hours.
The fatal incidents were reported from Morigaon, Rangia, Goalpara, and the outskirts of Shillong in neighbouring Meghalaya, turning festive cheer into mourning for several families.
Morigaon Tragedy: Festive Night Ends in Death
In a tragic accident near Bhorbondha, close to Morigaon town, two men—Deepjyoti Saikia and Arup Deka—lost their lives on the spot when their motorcycle rammed into a roadside wall.
The duo, who were related, were returning home after attending a celebratory dinner hosted by Arup’s brother, who had recently secured a job with the Border Security Force (BSF). The sudden loss has left the local community in deep shock.
Goalpara Accident Claims Two Lives
Another deadly mishap occurred in the Bhalukdubi area of Goalpara town, where a collision between an e-rickshaw and a Bolero near a petrol pump resulted in two deaths and left one person critically injured.
The deceased were identified as Rafila Marak of Bhalukdubi and Dhanmoni Nath of Tokorapara, Agia.
Two Minor Sisters Killed on Shillong Bypass
A pall of gloom descended on Badla Pathar Tiyapara near Nagarbera in South Kamrup after two minor sisters were killed in a road accident on the Shillong Bypass on Thursday.
The victims—Ayesha Siddiqua (9) and Jemina Khatun (7)—were travelling in a Bolero to Shillong to visit their father, who works in the Laitumkhrah area of the Meghalaya capital. The vehicle reportedly lost control and collided with a truck.
The crash left six others, including the driver, critically injured. All the injured are undergoing treatment at Shillong Civil Hospital. The bodies of the two children were brought back to their village and laid to rest late last night.
Rangia Multi-Vehicle Crash Kills One
In another incident, a multi-vehicle accident at Moranjana in Rangia claimed the life of a scooter rider. The accident involved a scooter, a Swift car, and a truck.
According to reports, the scooter attempted to overtake the truck but skidded and went underneath it. The truck driver’s sudden braking led to a Guwahati-bound Swift car—carrying a family returning from Nalbari after Bihu celebrations—crashing into the rear of the truck.
While the scooter rider died on the spot, four occupants of the Swift sustained injuries and were admitted to a local hospital.
