Calling his passing a great loss to Assam’s cultural heritage, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said Samar Hazarika carried forward the legacy of Sudhakantha Dr Bhupen Hazarika with distinction.
Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday expressed deep sorrow over the demise of eminent singer Samar Hazarika, stating that the State has lost “another golden voice” with his passing.
Taking to social media platform ‘X’, the Chief Minister said that Samar Hazarika “carried forward the rich legacy of Sudhakantha Dr Bhupen Hazarika and made significant contributions to the celebration of his birth centenary.”
“His soulful voice illuminated every occasion, and his contribution to Assam’s cultural landscape will always be remembered,” Dr Sarma wrote, while extending heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
Samar Hazarika, the youngest brother of Bharat Ratna Xudhakontho Dr Bhupen Hazarika, breathed his last at the family residence in Nizarapar at around 8:45 am on Monday (Jan 13).
He had been suffering from pneumonia and was undergoing treatment at Hayat Hospital, where he was admitted to the ICU for several days before being discharged following an improvement in his condition.
Born to Late Nilakanta Hazarika and Late Shantipriya Hazarika, Samar Hazarika began his musical journey in 1960. Over the decades, he lent his voice to numerous Assamese films and music albums, leaving a lasting imprint on the State’s music industry.
His last rites will be performed at the Nabagraha crematorium with full state honours.
Samar Hazarika’s demise has cast a pall of gloom across Assam, with several prominent personalities from the cultural and music fraternity expressing grief and paying tributes to the veteran artiste.
