Acting on a tip-off, Kamrup Police intercepted two luxury vehicles at Amingaon and recovered over 1.35 kg of heroin smuggled from Manipur
In a significant pre-Bhogali Bihu crackdown on drug trafficking, Kamrup Police seized a huge consignment of heroin worth around Rs 11 crore from Amingaon in North Guwahati and arrested two alleged peddlers on Tuesday.
The operation was conducted following specific intelligence inputs and was led by Additional Superintendent of Police (Kamrup) Kalyan Kumar Pathak. During the interception, police stopped two luxury vehicles and carried out a thorough search.
Security personnel recovered 1.358 kg of heroin, carefully concealed inside 97 soap cases. The narcotics were hidden in specially designed secret chambers built into the vehicles — a Mahindra Thar (AS-23 AD-6626) and a Maruti Jimny (AS-01 GN-7404).
Police arrested Anwar Hussain Kazi and Aminul Sikdar, both residents of Barpeta district, in connection with the seizure.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the heroin consignment was being smuggled from Manipur and was intended to be supplied to various locations in lower Assam.
Further investigation is underway to identify other members of the drug trafficking network and to ascertain possible interstate links.
