Samar Hazarika, who had been battling pneumonia, breathed his last at the Hazarika residence in Nizarapar on Tuesday morning
Eminent Assamese singer Samar Hazarika, the youngest brother of Bharat Ratna Xudhakontho Dr Bhupen Hazarika, passed away at his residence in Nizarapar, Guwahati, on Tuesday morning (Jan 13), casting a shadow over Uruka celebrations across the State.
Samar Hazarika had been unwell for the past few days and was suffering from pneumonia. He was undergoing treatment at Hayat Hospital and had remained in the Intensive Care Unit for several days before being discharged and brought home.
Born to Late Nilakanta Hazarika and Late Shantipriya Hazarika, Samar Hazarika began his musical journey in 1960. Over the decades, he made significant contributions to Assamese music, lending his voice to several Assamese films as well as music albums.
His mortal remains will be consigned to flames at the Nabagraha crematorium, where his last rites will be performed with full state honours.
Samar Hazarika’s demise has left the cultural fraternity of Assam in deep mourning, with artistes, musicians, and public figures expressing grief over the loss of a respected voice in the State’s musical heritage.
