Bangladeshi National Detained: The individual, identified as Saheb Ali, was detained following information from local residents and security groups.
A man suspected to be a Bangladeshi national was detained on Sunday in Kumarikata area under Tamulpur district of Assam, following alerts from local residents.
The individual has been identified as Saheb Ali, who is suspected to have entered Assam illegally a day earlier. Locals, along with members of the Vishva Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal, reportedly noticed his suspicious movements and informed the police as well as the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).
Acting on the information, police personnel reached the spot and detained the suspect for questioning. During preliminary interrogation, Saheb Ali reportedly claimed to be a Bangladeshi national. However, officials said further verification is underway to ascertain his identity and mode of entry.
No valid identity or travel documents were found in his possession. Police sources also said that the suspect was taking shelter in an abandoned shop located in the Kumarikata market area.
Cross-border infiltration continues to be a concern in Assam. Earlier on January 8, four Rohingya individuals were detained in Cachar district for allegedly entering Indian territory illegally.
According to reports, the Rohingyas had crossed into India from Bangladesh by breaching barbed wire fencing along the international border. Authorities have intensified vigilance amid recurring incidents of illegal infiltration in the state.
