Assam CM Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Lurinjyoti Gogoi will eventually contest from Dhubri taking potshots at the AJP chief
Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday (Jan 8) launched a scathing attack on Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, suggesting that the opposition leader has lost his political footing and relevance in the State.
CM Dr Sarma took direct potshots at the AJP chief and said that after facing defeats in Duliajan and Naharkatia, the former AASU leader is now set to lose in Khowang from where he is expected to contest in the 2026 assembly elections.
“Lurinjyoti Gogoi has lost from Naharkatia and he has lost from Duliajan. He will lose from Khowang this time. He has no fixed place anymore. Eventually, he will have to contest elections from Dhubri,” Dr Sarma quipped, implying that Gogoi is shifting his base toward areas with a different demographic profile.
The Assam Chief Minister further alleged that Gogoi has abandoned the interests of the indigenous Assamese people.
“Nowadays, Lurinjyoti Gogoi speaks for ‘Miyas’ and not for the Assamese people,” he added.
Dismissing the strength of Opposition parties in Assam, Dr Sarma stated that he sees no visible impact from them. He noted that while there used to be 15-16 strong opposition MLAs in the assembly, the current opposition has “thrown up its hands” even before the elections.
Echoing similar sentiment, Union Minister Pabitra Margherita mocked opposition’s readiness, stating that it is preparing for 2031 and not 2026.
“The opposition is not preparing for the 2026 elections; they are looking toward 2031 because they know they have no chance now,” the Union Minister told News Live.
Chief Minister Dr Sarma, meanwhile, also touched upon the upcoming census, warning that it might bring more “unfortunate news” for the indigenous Assamese population. Dr Sarma predicted that the “Miya Muslim” population in Assam could rise to 40%, posing a significant demographic challenge for Assam and indigenous tribes and communities of the State.
