From cricketing greats to common fans, wishes poured in for Kapil Dev — the man who famously led India to its first-ever World Cup glory in 1983 — on his 67th birthday today
The cricketing world as well as others are pausing for a moment to salute one of the game’s most transformative figures. Kapil Dev, the man who famously led India to its first-ever World Cup glory in 1983, celebrates his 67th birthday today.
From the terraces of the famous Lord’s to the boardrooms of modern Indian sports, the “Haryana Hurricane” remains a symbol of relentless grit and leadership.
Wishes Pour In: Tributes from the Sporting World
As soon as the clock struck midnight, social media was flooded with wishes from cricketers, celebrities, and fans alike.
“Many happy returns of the day, Kapil paaji. Wish you the best of health and a great year ahead. You continue to be an inspiration for us all!” Sachin Tendulkar wished the World Cup winning captain.
“India’s cricketing body hailed the legend’s stats—9,031 international runs and 687 wickets—tweeting, “Here’s wishing Team India’s 1983 World Cup-winning captain and one of the best all-rounders to have ever played the game, a very happy birthday,” BCCI wrote on ‘social media ‘X’.
“To the man who showed us how to win. Happy Birthday, Kaps! Still as sharp as those outswingers,” former teammate Ravi Shastri was quoted as wishing the ‘Haryana Hurricane’.
“Aao saare Kapil paji nu janamdin diyan mubarkaan dayiye (Let us all wish Kapil Paji a very happy birthday),” IPL franchisee Punjab Kings tweeted in Punjabi.
Thousands of fans used the hashtag #HappyBirthdayKapilDev, sharing clips of his iconic 175* against Zimbabwe and the catch that dismissed Viv Richards in the ’83 final, to wish the legendary cricketer on his 67th birthday.
A Legacy Beyond the Pitch
While Kapil Dev is celebrated for his 434 Test wickets—a world record at the time of his retirement—his 67th year finds him excelling in a completely different arena.
For many Indians, Kapil Dev is more than a former captain; he is the man who taught a nation to believe that they could be world champions.
Even at 67, the “Hurricane” shows no signs of slowing down.
