Cold Wave: Amid plunging temperatures and dense fog, the Tripura government has ordered the closure of all schools across the state until January 10 to ensure student safety.
In view of the prevailing severe cold wave, the Tripura government has announced the closure of all schools across the state until January 10. The decision applies to government, government-aided, and privately managed institutions and aims to protect students from harsh weather conditions.
Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha made the announcement on Monday through social media, highlighting concerns over children’s health and safety as temperatures continue to dip well below normal levels.
The Chief Minister announced via a Facebook post on January 5 that all schools—government-run, government-aided, and privately managed—will remain closed from January 6 to January 10, 2026, in view of the prevailing extreme cold weather conditions.
He further noted that the decision was taken after assessing reports from the Meteorological Department. “Our government does not want anyone to face difficulties while attending school. Considering the current weather situation, classes have been suspended to safeguard students,” he was quoted as saying by local media.
IMD Warning and Weather Conditions
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Tripura has been experiencing cold wave conditions for more than a week. Weather observations indicate a sharp fall in temperatures and reduced visibility across several districts.
- Temperature Dip: Day temperatures have remained around 16.8°C, nearly 8.6°C below the seasonal average.
- Fog Alert: Dense fog is likely during night and early morning hours in districts including West Tripura, Khowai, Sepahijala, Gomati, and South Tripura.
- Forecast: Dry weather with shallow to moderate fog is expected to continue over the next few days, with no significant change in minimum temperatures.
Parents Welcome the Move
The announcement has been welcomed by parents and teachers’ associations across the state. School attendance, particularly in rural and hilly areas, had already dropped as families struggled to cope with the biting cold and limited access to winter clothing during early morning commutes.
Officials from the education department said schools are likely to reopen on January 12, following the Sunday holiday, but added that the situation will be closely monitored. Parents have been advised to stay in touch with school authorities for any further updates or extensions.
