Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma made a number of significant announcements after officially kicking off Assam BJP’s wall-painting drive
Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma today (Jan 5) made a massive statement claiming that the BJP is election-ready, with candidate already finalised for almost 50 constituencies.
Launching the party’s wall-painting campaign alongside State BJP president Dilip Saikia, the Chief Minister drew a sharp contrast between the BJP’s internal stability and what he described as “corruption” in the Congress party.
Assam BJP “Election-Ready”
The Chief Minister revealed that in over half of Assam’s constituencies in which the BJP will contest, the party has already identified a single, consensus candidate. In approximately 10 to 12 other seats, there are multiple contenders, he further said, but emphasized that there is “no internal conflict” regarding ticket distribution.
Highlighting the BJP’s unique selection process, Chief Minister Dr Sarma said that unlike other parties, including the Congress, individuals cannot apply for a ticket in the BJP and that there is no requirement for money or formal application forms.
Announcing that candidates are proposed by party workers to the State Committee based on their merit and service, the Chief Minister reaffirmed that sitting district presidents will not be eligible for party tickets.
“Ticket Trading” in Congress
Dr Sarma leveled serious allegations against the Congress party, claiming that “horse-trading” for tickets is underway for as many as 23 constituencies.
“In the Congress, tickets are being auctioned for anything between Rs 3 crore to Rs 5 crore. Some leaders have already begun collecting money promising tickets to aspirants to contest the hustings,” the Chief Minister further alleged.
Chief Minister Dr Sarma went a step further saying that it is the “misfortune of Miyas” that they provide money to the Congress and vote for the party in elections only to see the party turning its backs during crisis situations. He noted that Congress leaders disappear when minority populations, particularly Miyas of Bangladeshi origin, face challenges like evictions.
New Slogans for “Developed Assam”
The BJP today officially kicked off its wall-painting drive with Chief Minister Dr Sarma unveiling the core slogans that will define the BJP’s campaign.
‘Asomor Surakhya, BJP-r Protigya’, ‘Bikashit Asom, Joi Aai Asom’ and ‘BJP-r Pon, Vande Mataram’ would be the core slogans that will define the BJP’s campaign for the upcoming elections, the Assam Chief Minister announced.
