The 5.1 Magnitude earthquake struck Assam at 4:17 am today (Jan 5) with the epicentre located 14 km from Morigaon
A 5.1 Magnitude earthquake jolted Assam and nearby states in the wee hours of Monday morning causing widespread panic among people.
The earthquake, measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale, struck at 4:17 am. According to seismological data, the epicenter of the tremor was located 14 km from Morigaon while vibrations were felt across the State, including the capital Guwahati, waking residents out of their sleep and sending them rushing into the streets.
The National Center for Seismology (NCS), the nodal agency of the Government of India that monitors earthquake activity in the country, stated that the epicentre of the quake was at a depth of 50 kilometres, NCS said in a post on X.
While no fatalities have been reported, at least two people were injured in Nadalbari village of Morigaon, while they tried to run out of their homes in panic.
Jaymati Deuri, an elderly woman, sustained injuries after colliding with a metal grill while attempting to rush out of her home in panic. Another resident of Morigaon named Neeraj Kumar was also injured during the scramble to run out of his house in panic.
Extent of Damage
The tremors caused visible structural damage in various parts of the State. At Samaguri in Nagaon district of Assam, several houses developed large cracks in their walls, leading to concerns regarding the safety of the buildings.
CCTV footages across the region showed the intensity of the shaking, with furniture toppling and structures swaying violently during the early morning hours.
