Zubeen Garg Murder Case: The AASU letter was signed by AASU president Utpal Sarma and general secretary Samiran Phukan
The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) today (Jan 4) shot off an urgent letter to Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, requesting him to arrange a special court to expedite the Zubeen Garg murder case trial besides also seeking his urgent intervention in appointing a team of senior advocates experienced in criminal cases as special public prosecutors.
The letter, signed by AASU president Utpal Sarma and general secretary Samiran Phukan, began by stating that the death of heartthrob Zubeen Garg has shattered the hearts and minds of the people of Assam.
The SIT formed by the Assam Government, they wrote, has filed a charge sheet in court after winding up its probe. The chargesheet, the letter further stated, clearly mentions that Zubeen Garg was murdered.
Reiterating the demand of the people as well as that of the students’ body for justice for Zubeen Garg, the AASU leadership noted with concern the appointed of senior lawyers by the arrested accused for their defence.
They have, therefore, sought the appoint of a powerful team of senior lawyers as special public prosecutors to represent the government in the trial process.
The AASU leadership further said that their demands vindicate Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma who had repeatedly spoken about providing justice besides supporting the appointment of a Special Public Prosecutor to assist in the entire legal process.
The influential students body, in the urgent letter, has therefore urged the Chief Minister to arrange for a special court to expedite the justice process and to immediately appoint a team of senior advocates experienced in criminal cases as special public prosecutors so that the trial process reaches a logical conclusion and justice is served.
