Northeast is entering 2026 under chilly and fog-laden conditions.
Mizoram‘s capital, Aizawl, has witnessed a sharp dip in temperature over the past several days.
Day temperature went down to approximately 17° C, with even chillier nights.
These colder conditions have been accompanied by increased dew points in some localities, making the air feel heavier and chillier, especially during the early morning and late evening.
Locals say this cold spell is just the beginning, with many predicting that January will bring in truly unforgiving winter weather.
“This feels like the usual pattern before the real cold sets in,” said a resident of northern Aizawl, adding that nights have already become significantly colder compared to earlier this month.
Another mesmerising aspect is the way the weather has been changing: by dusk, the hills that ring the area are now shrouded in a thick blanket of clouds; nor does the cloud cover break up at dawn.
The cloud cover, together with increased moisture content in the air, reduces visibility at high spots and adds to winter discomfort.
While daytime temperatures remain relatively less chilly, the sharp drop after sunset has persuaded locals to bring out winter wear earlier than usual.
According to residents, if the current trends are anything to go by, then January may see the coldest days of this season, with denser fog and colder nights across Aizawl and its surroundings.
