Angel Chakma and his younger brother were first racially abused by the attackers, called “Chinese” and then brutally attacked after they objected to the slurs
Protests and candlelight marches have been held in various parts of the Northeast, including Tripura’s capital Agartala, over the killing of Angel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student from the State, who succumbed to injuries suffered after being stabbed by a group of six men in Selaqui area on Dehradun on December 9.
The incident occurred when Angel Chakma and his younger brother, Michael Chakma, had gone to a local grocery shop when they were first racially abused by the attackers, called “Chinese” and then brutally attacked after they objected to the slurs.
Angel Chakma, 24, succumbed to his injuries 14 days later.
Angel’s father Tarun Prasad Chakma, a Border Security Force soldier, alleged delay in filing of the FIR and said Angel had told the attackers after facing the racial slurs that he was Indian and not Chinese.
“We are not Chinese… We are Indians. What certificate should we show to prove that?” Angel had reportedly said.
Michael, Angel’s younger brother, said that the men first attacked him and when Angel came to his rescue, the attackers stabbed him in his spine.
“I want justice for my brother. I want to know why they did this,” media reports quoted Michael as saying.
Five accused have been arrested after Police registered a case on Dec 12 while the prime accused is still absconding and is believed to have fled to Nepal.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, meanwhile, spoke to the father of the victim over phone on Monday and assured him of strict punishment for the accused.
“This incident is sad for all of us,” Dhami said, and assured him that the government will take strict action and bring the attackers to book.
