PAN Aadhaar linking must be completed before December 31, 2025. Check why PAN Aadhaar linking is important, penalties for delay, and a simple step-by-step guide to link it easily.
The PAN Aadhaar linking deadline is approaching fast, and taxpayers across India must take action immediately. The last date to complete PAN Aadhaar linking is December 31, 2025. From January 1, 2026, PAN cards that are not linked with Aadhaar will become inoperative and cannot be used for tax or major financial work.
According to official rules, individuals who were issued PAN using an Aadhaar Enrolment ID before October 1, 2024 must complete PAN Aadhaar linking using their permanent Aadhaar number. If the linking is not done on time, such PAN cards will stop working for income tax filing, bank-related services, and high-value transactions.
Tax authorities have clearly warned that missing the PAN Aadhaar linking deadline will lead to financial loss. Income tax refunds may be stopped, and higher TDS rates will be applied from January 1, 2026. This means more tax will be deducted from salary, interest income, and other payments.
To complete PAN Aadhaar linking, taxpayers should keep a valid PAN number, Aadhaar number, and a mobile number linked with Aadhaar ready. In many cases, a fee of Rs 1,000 is required, especially if the PAN was issued before July 1, 2017 and was never linked earlier.
Below is a simple step-by-step guide to complete PAN Aadhaar linking –
Step 1: Visit the official income tax e-filing portal and go to the homepage. Under the Quick Links section, select the option to link Aadhaar. Enter your PAN number and Aadhaar number to begin the process.
Step 2: Choose the e-Pay Tax option to pay the mandatory fee. Re-enter your PAN details and verify your mobile number using the OTP sent to your phone.
Step 3: Select the Income Tax option and proceed with payment. Choose the assessment year and mark the payment category as Other Receipts. The amount of Rs 1,000 will be auto-filled.
Step 4: Complete the payment using net banking, debit card, or UPI. The payment may take four to five working days to reflect in the system, so patience is required at this stage.
Step 5: Once the payment is confirmed, return to the Link Aadhaar section on the portal. Enter your PAN and Aadhaar details again for verification.
Step 6: After successful validation, a message saying “Your payment details are verified.” will appear. Now enter your name exactly as mentioned on your Aadhaar card and provide your mobile number.
Step 7: Confirm Aadhaar validation and mention whether only the year of birth is printed on your Aadhaar card. Finally, enter the six-digit OTP sent to your registered mobile number to complete PAN Aadhaar linking.
Taxpayers can also check the PAN Aadhaar linking status without logging in. By selecting the Link Aadhaar Status option under Quick Links and entering PAN and Aadhaar details, the current status will be shown. A green checkmark confirms successful PAN Aadhaar linking.
With the deadline very close, completing PAN Aadhaar linking now is the safest choice. Doing it early helps avoid penalties, higher tax deductions, blocked refunds, and last-minute technical problems.
