West Karbi Anglong: Violence broke out after a few people who were holding sit-in demonstrations demanding eviction in VGR-PGR land were picked up by Assam Police
Violence broke out in West Karbi Anglong district of Assam after protesters, who were holding sit-in demonstrations demanding eviction in VGR-PGR land, resorted to arson and violence after a few protesters were picked up by police, reports said.
The protesters also torched the ancestral residence of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) Chief Executive Member (CEM) Tuliram Ronghang at Donkamukam besides pelting stones at police forcing cops to open fire to bring the situation under control.
Three protesters, reports said, were injured in police firing which further flared up the protests.
Videos showed protesters clashing with police while a section of them set the KAAC CEM’s ancestral house at Donkamukam on fire besides pelting stones and destroying other property.
Efforts are underway to bring the situation under control with additional police teams rushing to the violence-hit areas.
Education Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu, meanwhile, has rushed to West Karbi Anglong under the express orders of Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma to firefight the situation and oversee efforts to restore normalcy.
