PM Narendra Modi said the new fertiliser plant in Namrup marks the beginning of a new chapter in the region’s industrial progress
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday (Dec 21) came down heavily on the Congress party and accused it of helping illegal Bangladeshi immigrants settle in Assam.
Prime Minister Modi was speaking after laying the foundation stone for a 10,600-crore-rupee Brownfield Ammonia-Urea fertiliser plant at Namrup in Dibrugarh district which will be built within the existing premises of the Brahmaputra Valley Fertiliser Corporation Limited (BVFCL).
Calling it a ‘big day’ for Assam and the Northeast, PM Modi said the project marks the beginning of a new chapter in the region’s industrial progress, calling it a historic milestone not just for Assam but for the entire North East.
He further launched a pointed attack on the Opposition, as he accused earlier governments of abandoning fertilizer units and neglecting farmers of the State.
“They have no concern for Assam, its people, or their identity,” Prime Minister Modi said.
The project, it may be mentioned, will incur an investment of around Rs 10,600 crore and is expected to produce more than 12 lakh metric tonnes of urea annually and create thousands of jobs, both directly and indirectly.
Prime Minister Modi also said the new fertiliser plant will ensure uninterrupted supply of urea to farmers in Assam and neighbouring states.
“This project will greatly benefit our farmers and generate opportunities for local youth,” Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said, and added: “Slated for commissioning by 2030, this project will create 300+ direct and 1,000+ indirect jobs, powering industry & empowering farmers. It reaffirms Assam’s rise as the new growth engine of NE India under the double-engine government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi”.
