Itanagar Municipal Elections : Ruling BJP registered a thumping victory against oppositions by winning 14 out of 20 Wards.
In the decisive Itanagar Municipal Corporation elections, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registered a thumping victory against the opposition parties winning 14 of the 20 Wards. Of the 14 seats, BJP won four seats – wards 4, 6, 7, and 19 uncontested.
BJP candidates Gigi Rena won Ward 18 by 695 votes, Likha Nari Tadar won Ward 16 with 676 votes, and Lokam Sikio clinched Ward 1 by 534 votes. The newly elected Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) corporator, Gora Lotak, registered the highest victory margin by winning Ward 11 with 818 votes. The party also won Wards 9 and 12.
The opposition Congress won only three seats.
The civic polls were held on Dec 15, and the counting of votes for 186 district council and 1,947 gram panchayat member seats began the following morning. The counting of votes was concluded on Saturday, Dec 20.
According to the officials, Itanagar saw a disappointing voter turnout of only 51.39 % in the Itanagar Municipal Corporation polls, where 24,604 voters casted their votes out of a total of 47,877 eligible voters. The voters’ turnout in rural areas of the state was better compared to Itanagar.
In the Pasighat Municipal Council elections in East Siang district, the People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) achieved a significant victory by winning five out of the eight councillor seats. The PPA, being a regional party, won wards 1 to 5, registering a clear majority, while the opposition BJP won two seats in Pasighat.
The PPA candidate Tagom Padung won ward 1 by a margin of 361 votes, followed by Mem Tamut, Oyon Pabin, Kamin Lego, and Rahul Tamuk, and independent candidate Oni Tamuk won Ward 8.
