Premier League: Manchester City went on top of the Premier League standings after their win over West Ham with Arsenal facing Everton later in the night
Chelsea bounced back after going two goals down to earn a point in their Premier League clash against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park on Saturday (Dec 20).
Nick Woltemade’s first-half double was cancelled by a scintillating Reece James free kick and Joao Pedro’s equaliser as the Blue, already 8 points behind leage leaders Arsenal before the start of play, could avoid not taking even a single point from their travels.
Newcastle could still have won had Woltemade added a third to his double to complete his hat-trick late in the first half while substitute Harvey Barnes also missed two golden opportunities to win it for the host.
Chelsea remain fourth with 29 points while Newcastle are 11th with 23.
On the other hand, Manchester City moved to the top of the table beating struggling West Ham United 3-0 at The Etihad.
Erling Haaland scored in the 5th and 69th minute while Tijjani Reinders netted one in the 38th minute of the first half to seal it for City.
Arsenal travel to the Hill Dickinson Stadium, Everton’s new stadium, in a late night fixture. A victory will put the Gunners back on top of the table.
Elsewhere, Brentford defeated bottom-placed Wolves 2-0 while Burnley, placed 19th, earned a point in their clash against Bournemouth, thanks to a 90th minute Armando Broja equaliser after Antoine Semanyo had put Bournemouth ahead in the 67th minute.
Brighton’s encounter against Sunderland at the American Express Stadium ended in a goalless draw.
