No More Silent Dropouts: Now, if a Child Skips School in Assam, Parents Will Get SMS
The days when students could quietly skip school without their parents noticing will soon be over in Assam.
In a move aimed at tackling absenteeism at its root, the Assam government has introduced an automated SMS-based alert system that immediately informs parents and teachers when a student remains absent from class.
Stating that absenteeism is not just a statistic, it often has a reason and deserves timely attention, not neglect, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, ” We have taken a unique initiative which sends SMS alerts to parents and teachers in case of absentee students, so that issues can be fixed at the root.”
Under the new initiative, if a student remains absent from class for 5 consecutive days, an SMS alert is automatically triggered and sent to both parents and the class teacher.
This will ensure that prolonged absenteeism does not go unnoticed.
By directly involving parents at an early stage, the government hopes to address issues such as health concerns, family problems or the risk of dropouts before they escalate.
To ensure wider reach and understanding, the messages will be delivered in multiple languages- Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Hindi and English, with a minimum of two local languages used in each district.
