The body of a 19-year-old student who drowned in the Manu River at Kailashahar in Tripura’s Unakoti district on Tuesday was recovered by the search team after nearly 24 hours after the incident today.
Debajyoti Ghosh, a first-semester student of Dharmanagar College and the only son of Jawahar Kumar Ghosh of Shivbari area in North Tripura’s Dharmanagar town, had come to Kailashahar at his grandfather Ajit Ghosh’s residence in the Chhantai area to attend a family function.
Around 12:30 pm on Tuesday, he, along with three other friends, went to bathe in the river. As Debajyoti did not know how to swim, he reportedly slipped into deep water and drowned.
The Kailashahar Police were immediately informed, following which personnel from the police, fire service, Civil Defence, SDRF and TSR rushed to the spot and launched a search operation.
Despite continuous efforts throughout Tuesday and the night, the youth could not be traced.
Seven special divers from Chandipur area of Kailashahar resumed the search operation this morning and recovered his body.
The body was later sent to Unakoti District Hospital for post-mortem examination.
