PM Narendra Modi termed the opportunity to address the Ethiopian Parliament “moment of great privilege”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been conferred with Ethiopia‘s highest award — The Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia — by his Ethiopian counterpart Abiy Ahmed Ali.
The award, bestowed upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his exceptional contribution towards strengthening India-Ethiopia partnership, was conferred on him in a special ceremony hosted at the Addis International Convention Centre on Tuesday.
PM Modi is the first head of state to be conferred with the award.
The award was also conferred for his visionary leadership as a global statesman, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement in New Delhi.
“”I dedicate it to the 140 crore people of India,” Prime Minister Modi posted on X, and added: “It is a great honour for me to be honoured by the ancient and prosperous culture of the world…I accept this honour with full humility and gratitude from all Indians.”
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi also addressed the joint session of the Ethiopian Parliament today (Dec 17), saying he feels “very much at home in Ethiopia” and termed the opportunity to address the Ethiopian Parliament “moment of great privilege”.
“It was a great honour and privilege to address the Ethiopian Parliament this morning. Ethiopia’s rich history, culture and spirit inspire deep respect and admiration. I conveyed India’s commitment to further strengthening our partnership, guided by shared values, mutual trust and a common vision for peace, development and cooperation,” he said.
Prime Minister Modi also laid a wreath at the Adwa Victory Monument which, he said, “stands as a powerful symbol of Ethiopia’s courage, unity and unwavering spirit”.
