Zubeen Garg Death Case : Prior to the hearing, copies of the over 2,500-page chargesheet filed by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) will be provided to all the accused at their respective jail
The much-awaited first hearing in the mysterious death case of Assam’s music icon, Zubeen Garg, is set to be held today. All seven accused will be produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court virtually through video conferencing.
Initially, the court had directed that the accused be physically present in court for the hearing. However, the police and CID/SIT, citing the possibility of law and order issues and potential public unrest, pleaded before the court that physical production could pose risks. The court subsequently approved the request for virtual production of the accused.
Prior to the hearing, copies of the over 2,500-page chargesheet filed by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) will be provided to all the accused at their respective jail, Baksa and Haflong. The chargesheet details the probe into the singer’s death in Singapore on September 19, 2025, and includes murder charges against four of the seven accused under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Public Prosecutor Pradip Kumar Knowar stated that during the virtual hearing, the accused will be asked about their health and whether they have received the chargesheet. Following this, the case will be committed to the Sessions Court, where charges will be formally framed. The accused will be required to appear physically once the case moves to the Sessions Court.
The SIT, which spent nearly three months meticulously investigating the circumstances surrounding Zubeen Garg’s death, recorded statements from around 300 people before filing the chargesheet. The development marks a significant step in a case that has gripped Assam since the singer’s untimely demise.
The court has also ensured that legal representation will be available for all accused. If any advocate refuses to take up the case, the court will direct the Legal Aid Defense Counsel to provide representation, ensuring that no accused is tried without proper legal support.
