Karbi Anglong Police seized 14.14 kg of opium worth Rs. 84 lakhs.
Despite strict security at sensitive border areas, illegal drug trafficking into Assam persists. In two separate operations on Saturday, Karbi Anglong Police seized 14.14 kg of opium, valued at over Rs. 84 lakh, and arrested two peddlers.
In another operation, 319,000 pieces of Burmese cigarettes worth Rs. 30 lakh were recovered, with two more peddlers arrested.
Police seized the opium after intercepting a truck traveling from Manipur to Bokajan in Assam. A thorough search revealed the drugs hidden inside the truck’s air cylinder. Both the driver and co-driver were arrested and necessary legal action has been initiated against them.

Notably, on Dec 5, Karbi Anglong Police recovered 39 soap boxes containing 489 grams of suspected heroin and arrested one person. The narcotics were seized from a Bolero Neo vehicle at Langvoku Road, Men Rongphar village under Manja PS jurisdiction.
Similarly, on the same day, Dec 5, Karbi Anglong police recovered 1.530 kg of suspected Morphine concealed inside the spare tyre tube of a Maruti Swift vehicle, and arrested two persons. The car was coming from Dimapur and was intercepted for a routine check when the drugs were found. The Assam border, particularly in the Karbi Anglong region, is frequently exploited by drug traffickers as a key route for smuggling illicit substances. This ongoing issue highlights the urgent need for more stringent monitoring and tighter control by the concerned authorities. Increased vigilance, better surveillance technology, and more coordinated efforts between state and central agencies are essential to curb this illegal trade and ensure the safety of the region. Only through such proactive measures can Assam effectively combat the growing menace of drug trafficking.
