Former Lok Sabha Speaker Shivraj Patil passes away at 90 at his Latur home after a brief illness. The veteran leader is remembered for his calm nature, long political journey, and contributions to India.
Senior Congress leader and respected parliamentarian Shivraj Patil passed away at the age of 90 at his residence ‘Devghar’ in Latur, Maharashtra. His family said that he died after a brief illness. His death has left a deep sense of sadness in political circles, as he was known for his calm personality and graceful public life.
He is survived by his son Shailesh Patil, daughter-in-law Archana who is a BJP leader, and two granddaughters. His family said that he had been unwell for some time, and he breathed his last early on Friday morning. People close to him shared that he always maintained dignity and never attacked anyone personally in speeches or conversations.
Shivraj Patil had a long and influential political journey. He served as the Union Home Minister from 2004 to 2008 and was the 10th Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 1991 to 1996. He also held the posts of Governor of Punjab and Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh from 2010 to 2015. His work in Parliament and government earned him great respect across parties.
Born on October 12, 1935, he started his public life as the municipal council chief in Latur. He was later elected as an MLA in the early 1970s and went on to win the Latur Lok Sabha seat seven times, becoming one of the strongest political figures from the region. He lost the 2004 Lok Sabha election to BJP’s Rupatai Patil Nilangekar, but his respect among leaders never reduced.
Party colleagues say he was known for his disciplined lifestyle, love for reading, and deep understanding of the Constitution. A Congress leader recalled his nature and said that he never used harsh words and maintained dignity throughout his life. His command over Marathi, English, and Hindi made him one of the most articulate voices in Parliament.
The passing of Shivraj Patil marks the end of an era for Indian politics. Leaders cutting across party lines have remembered him as a gentle, knowledgeable, and principled politician.
