Reports suggest a widening rift between senior UDP leader Paul Lyngdoh and Metbah Lyngdoh, fuelling rumours that Paul may exit ahead of 2028.
In Meghalaya’s shifting political landscape, unsettling questions loom over the United Democratic Party (UDP) as the party navigates internal tensions under the watchful eyes of senior leaders Paul Lyngdoh and party president Metbah Lyngdoh.
The mid-term cabinet reshuffle has sparked debates over transparency, political ethics, and the party’s cohesion, leaving the state’s oldest regional party struggling to answer why it endorsed a sudden overhaul it had earlier publicly dismissed.
With the 2028 Assembly elections on the horizon, the UDP’s silence has intensified speculation about leadership rifts and strategic miscalculations.

Meanwhile, UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh emphasised that any grievances should be expressed openly within the party’s platform, underscoring the party’s expectation of internal resolution over public speculation.
“I have nothing to say about what people are discussing outside. As far as party matters are concerned, I would like to say this clearly: anyone who has any grievance or any kind of concern should express it openly within the party platform,” he said.
