Fury in Sikkim University: Students Demand Removal of ‘Absconding’ Tezpur Finance Office
The Sikkim University Students’ Association (SUSA) which has been opposing the appointment of Dr. Braja Bandhu Mishra, an absconding Finance Officer from Tezpur University as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to the Vice-Chancellor of Sikkim University, Professor Santanu Kumar Swain, has now demanded the cancellation of his appointment.
The association has also sought an immediate official clarification from the Vice-Chancellor regarding the decision.
Stating that Mishra is currently facing an ongoing financial fraud case at Tezpur University, the SUSA raised concerns about the credibility and timing of his appointment.
The issue has triggered widespread dissatisfaction among students, especially at a time when several key posts in Sikkim University, including Finance Officer, Librarian, and various non-teaching positions, remain vacant.
A delegation of SUSA executives met Vice Chancellor Professor Santanu Kumar Swain earlier today to seek an explanation regarding the decision. However, no formal clarification was provided.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, SUSA President Deebya Karki expressed strong objection to the move.
“This is the first time an OSD to the Vice Chancellor has been appointed in Sikkim University. Why bring in someone who is already facing a financial fraud case, especially when crucial posts remain unfilled? The appointment must be cancelled,” she said.
Later, when media personnel approached the university administration for comments, both Sikkim University and the Vice Chancellor refused to provide any official statement on the matter.
