Swarnimoyee, the 50-year-old female Kaziranga safari elephant, was owned by a person named Upendra Saharia
A female safari elephant at the internationally-famed Kaziranga National Park (KNP) passed away on Thursday after it fainted on the National Highway 715 while returning from safari duty.
Swarnimoyee, the female safari elephant privately owned by a person named Upendra Saharia, was around 50 years old and collapsed on the national highway near Bagori at around 8 am today (Dec 11).
She was immediately treated by a team of veterinary doctors from the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation And Conservation (CWRC) and, upon treatment, managed to stand on its feet and move across the highway with the help of other elephants.
However, after travelling some distance, the female pachyderm collapsed yet again in a field near Bagori at around 1:45 pm and, sadly, passed away.
A post mortem was later carried out to find out the cause of death after which she was cremated in the presence of its owner, the mahout and other wildlife officials and the local people.
