Guwahati: The exact reason of the fire that broke out around midnight is, however, not known but the blaze is believed to have been sparked by a short circuit
A massive fire gutted a six-storeyed commercial building in ABC locality of Guwahati, triggering shock and concern among people, particularly State Bank of India (SBI) account holders, since several offices of the nationalised bank were located in the building.
Besides SBI offices, the high-rise building also had an affluent shopping mall, Sohum Emporia, that served thousands of customers, including high-end shoppers, every day.
The fire started around midnight and the initial sparks, the exact reason for which is not known but is believed to be due to a short-circuit, began spreading quickly and engulfed the entire building in no time.
Fire tenders were immediately called and as many as 15 water trucks battled hard to bring the blaze under control although it has not been completely extinguished yet.
Plumes of smoke can still be seen coming out of the windows with firemen trying hard to completely extinguish the fire.
Although property worth several crores — the exact figure is, however, not known — was reduced to ash, there has been no casualty or injury as a result of the inferno.
