Meghalaya CM stressed that Meghalaya does not see the rise of concerts in other northeastern states as a competition.
Meghalaya CM Conrad K. Sangma has said that the surge of major concerts across the Northeast should be viewed as a shared regional advantage rather than a competition among states.
His remarks came in response to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s recent comments about Guwahati’s potential to become a major concert hub, stating that people from across the region will travel to the city for such events and that Guwahati could become a hub for the concert economy like Shillong if it continues to host shows of similar scale.
Chief Sarma highlighted the massive economic potential of the concert industry. Citing examples like Coldplay’s concert in Ahmedabad, which reportedly generated Rs 600 crore, he emphasised how similar events could uplift Assam’s economy, generate employment, and boost the hospitality and tourism sectors.
Meghalaya CM emphasised that healthy and positive competition is helping strengthen the Northeast’s identity as a premier music destination, adding that each state brings its own unique strengths to the cultural and tourism ecosystem.
“It’s a healthy competition. I always feel that positive competitiveness is very important. It is promoting the Northeast as a destination, and it’s a great thing. Meghalaya and Shillong will always have their niche. Each state, each region, each city has its own uniqueness and competitive advantage. Playing around those advantages should be the strategy of every state government,” he said.
The Meghalaya CM stressed that Meghalaya does not see the rise of concerts in other northeastern states as a competition.
“We don’t see it as competition. Overall, it is promoting the region as a whole as a destination for music. We have always said the Northeast is a music destination, and we welcome this move. We hope all Northeast states move forward together in creating a very healthy area of competition and promote the music and concert economy for the entire nation and the world,” he added.
