Kuki Inpi Condemns Meitei MLA. In a press release issued on Monday, the KIU criticized the MLA’s sudden appearance at the Litan Sareikhong Relief Camps
The Kuki Inpi Ukhrul District (KIU) has strongly condemned the visit undertaken by Meitei BJP MLA Yumnam Khemchand Singh to Kuki areas on Monday, describing it as uninvited, unauthorized, and insensitive to the plight of displaced Kuki communities.
Significantly, Yumnam Khemchand Singh was the first Meitei political leader who entered Kuki areas in Ukhrul since the May 2023 ethnic violence.
In a press release issued on Monday, the KIU criticized the MLA’s sudden appearance at the Litan Sareikhong Relief Camps, accompanied by a large security contingent, calling it a breach of protocol and humanitarian sensitivity. The organization said the visit caused distress among Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who continue to live with trauma and uncertainty following the ethnic violence that shook Manipur in May 2023.
“True goodwill cannot be proclaimed through intrusion or political posturing, especially when justice is neither delivered nor sincerely pursued. Until that day arrives, any outreach attempt remains fundamentally hollow,” KIU said in the release.
The KIU also questioned MLA Khemchand’s role during the violence.
The statement emphasized that silence during the crisis cannot be erased by sudden visits, and criticized the trip as a political exercise rather than an act of genuine concern.
The KIU warned that the limited movement of Meitei individuals through Ukhrul, permitted out of respect for the Tangkhul community’s efforts to maintain peace, should not be interpreted as permission for political leaders to enter Kuki areas without protocol.
However, MLA Yumnam Khemchand Singh described his visit as a confidence-building initiative aimed at promoting communal harmony. Visiting Litan, a Kuki hamlet near the Myanmar border, he met with 173 displaced villagers and expressed hope for peace, saying that all should pray for the return of peace in the state.
Khemchand emphasized the need for long-term reconciliation, urging communities to look beyond past conflicts for the sake of future generations. He also highlighted the importance of visiting each other’s villages and learning to coexist despite differences.
