Govt Orders Probe Into Thangskai Mine Collapse. The East Jaintia Hills district administration has been tasked with conducting a thorough verification
Disaster or rumour? Prestone Tynsong, Meghalaya’s Deputy Chief Minister (Home), has ordered a fact-check in Thangskai village after unconfirmed reports surfaced that three coal labourers were buried alive in a rat-hole mine collapse in East Jaintia Hills.
Speaking to reporters, Tynsong said that no official report has been received so far, and emphasized the urgency of the investigation. “We are not getting any report right now. In fact, I’ve already directed our district administration to find out whether it’s true or not. But till now, we are yet to get any clue on that,” he said.
The East Jaintia Hills district administration has been tasked with conducting a thorough verification of the claims from Thangskai village and reporting back to the state government.
Tynsong also addressed concerns raised by the state BJP regarding illegal coal mining in the region. He stated that the government is continuously monitoring and investigating such activities, despite the logistical challenges posed by the difficult terrain. “We are always on the job of checking out and reaching out wherever we get information if illegal mining takes place or not. And that is the ongoing process that we are doing, and we are trying our best to make sure that illegal mining does not at all take place,” he added.
The Deputy Chief Minister acknowledged the challenges of monitoring remote mining areas, explaining that officials often have to walk five to six hours into deep gorges to reach mining sites. “Of course, there are challenges because, the places where we have to go, you can’t even approach by vehicle. But still, we are trying our best and we have instructed district administration to be more proactive in this sector to make sure that illegal mining does not happen,” Tynsong said.
