The bandh took place despite the Itanagar Capital Region administration declaring the shutdown illegal and unlawful
Normal life came to a standstill in the Itanagar capital region on Tuesday as the Arunachal Pradesh Indigenous Youth Organization (APIYO), along with the All Naharlagun Youth Organization and the Indigenous Youth Force of Arunachal, called a 12-hour bandh. The shutdown, which began at 5 AM, saw roads nearly deserted and shops across the city remained closed.
The bandh took place despite the Itanagar Capital Region administration declaring the shutdown illegal and unlawful, citing Supreme Court rulings that stated that any bandh called by political or civil organizations is unconstitutional. District Magistrate Toko Babu warned citizens against participating in the shutdown.
The bandh went ahead peacefully, with no untoward incidents reported. Arunachal Pradesh Police along with paramilitary forces maintained heightened security across the city to ensure law and order and public safety.
APIYO President, Taro Sonam Liyak said the bandh was in protest against the government’s inaction on issues raised since October 6. The shutdown was called in Itanagar demanding the demolition of the Capital Jama Masjid, a ban on weekly markets, and the deportation of illegal immigrants.
A meeting promised by the state government on December 5 did not take place, prompting the shutdown. A previous bandh planned for November 25 was postponed due to festivals and sports events and also because the government had assured a meeting.
